If you haven't attended AN OA phone meeting before, here are a few suggestions for getting started...
There are many different meeting formats, but generally there is a leader/moderator who opens the meeting, often with the Serenity Prayer, the OA Preamble, and other information about OA. The moderator also typically defines the nature or format of the particular meeting and guides the meeting through its established format.
Each OA phone line has a particular number (usually preceded by the * sign on your phone keypad) that you use to unmute your line so that you can speak. (Typically, when you input the code, a prompt will tell you if you are then muted or unmuted.) Either the same number or a different number is used to unmute your phone after you finish speaking. Usually the leader/moderator will mention the mute/unmute functionality for the meeting. The mute/unmute instructions are also typically listed in "Details" for each phone meeting listed on the OA website.
NOTE: if the meeting has interference on the line such as static or background noise, the leader/moderator usually has the capability to silence all lines to restore a quiet atmosphere to the line. After that, normal mute and unmute functions can be used.
On many meetings, the leader/moderator will ask for volunteers to read items such as the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of OA and other passages from OA or AA literature.
Most regular OA phone meetings provide opportunities for members to share their experience, strength, and hope in OA, particularly in relation to a passage read in the meeting, a speaker's message, and/or an announced topic. Many meetings encourage sharing by anyone who is in attendance and wish to speak, but some meetings have specific requirements for sharing, such as length of abstinence or other qualifiers. The meeting format will define the sharing guidelines.
You will quickly "get the hang of" how sharing works by listening to a few shares during a meeting. Typically participants ask to be recognized by the moderator, saying something such as "Hi, this is Lee, may I share?"
Most regular OA meetings are not back-and-forth discussions. In fact, cross-talk is strongly discouraged. Cross-talk is defined as giving advice to others who have already shared, speaking directly to another member rather than the group, and questioning or interrupting the person speaking at the time. Although the intent may be to show support, cross-talk can be misinterpreted and can discourage the open and accepting environment of the meeting.
